My Go-To Skincare Routine

Ever since moving to the west coast, my skin has been dryer than dry. Eventually I became so embarrassed by my unsightly red, itchy, flaky skin that I went to a dermatologist. A $200 office visit later (YAY high-deductible health plans), I was told I have dry skin. Sweet. I think the doctor could see the disappointment on my face with his vague diagnoses that he tried cheering me up with a free sample of Aquaphor. Yayyy.

The tricky part about sharing with you my skin care routine is that it’s different for everyone. I’m a 32 year old female with dry skin. I care about preventing signs of aging. You may have oily skin or rosacea. No two faces were made the same. So take the list below with a grain of salt. I personally love Sephora because they’ll give you a sample of any product so you can take it home and see if it works for you! So long as a product does what it promises to do, I have no qualms about spending the money to take care of myself. I feel much more confident when I have a handle on my skin – so this is your friendly reminder that you’re worth it and if you want to invest in a sound skincare routine, DO IT!

So let’s get right to it!

fullsizerender-1

Face wash: I dig the Jan Marini Bioglycolic Face Cleanser because it’s chock full of glycolic acid – which happens to be second best at stimulating collagen and tightening pores behind retinol (which is generally too strong for my sensitive skin). I love the creamy texture (who else is grossed out by the word creamy – is it just me?!) and the fact that you massage it into your skin sans water (found on their website).

Serum: What I love about serums is the fact that they boast higher concentrations of active ingredients and less of the junky thickeners – so they work faster and are generally more potent. With that said, I am a full on hyaluronic acid serum supporter. Why you ask? Well, just so happens hyaluronic acid binds to the skin up to 1000 times its weight in water. HELLO hydration! After using this bad boy consistently for just one week, I’ve seen a huge difference. If you need a serum to combat dry skin, check out Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum (found at Sephora).

Moisturizer: I need a moisturizer to quench my skin’s thirst and help prevent aging, so I can’t get enough of Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 from SkinCeuticals. This cream addresses one of the biggest problems with aging skin – lipid depletion! Lipid depletion is essentially when you lose the compounds in your skin’s surface – specifically ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. Once you lose said lipids, the skin begins to show signs of accelerated aging and loses its ability to self-repair. This cream has significantly improved my hydration AND it smells amazing to boot (Found on their website).

Eye cream: Have you ever heard of alguronic acid? K good, until recently I hadn’t either. But I now know it’s an algae-derived acid with anti-aging benefits including accelerated cell turnover, and promotes tight, wrinkle-free skin over time. I recently started using Algernist eye balm and can’t speak to its potency yet, but I can tell you it’s way friendlier on the wallet than the La Mer eye concentrate I was previously using! If this balm helps keep crow’s feet and dark circles at bay, count me in (found at Sephora).

Night mask(s): I recently discovered that night masks are an amazing way to give your skin deep hydration while you sleep! I think my favorite part of using a night mask is waking up to soft, supple, dewy skin. Two of my current favorites are Farmacy Sleep Tight Firming Night Balm and Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Water-Max Sleeping Mask (both found at Sephora).

Night serum: Ever since my aesthetician turned me on to Reservatrol B E from SkinCeuticals, I have become an avid fan. It’s a nighttime concentrate that is jam packed with antioxidants and has helped my skin’s overall appearance. Given the hefty price tag, I use it about 3 nights a week and alternate with my other night creams/masks (Found on their website).

And there you go. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to look for a part-time job to pay for all the stuff I slather on my face!
